Minister Confirms Ministry of Defence Examining Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defence official has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in any cars.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

In a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about secret material while travelling in Chinese cars.

He said that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

This announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and cause chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The broader defence environment underscores the importance of strong protocols and caution in all aspects of government operations, including vehicle use to discussions habits.
