The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
