Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
