Christantus Uche Fuels Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight entry to the last 16, particularly after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match provided a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their domestic season proved outmatched against a mostly second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
