A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
